Chester Clean Up & Pick Up Programs

Several years ago the city was in need to review and revise some policies in order to reduce fuel and labor costs and to make better use of your tax dollars.  The following is the Clean Up and Pick Up Programs for the City of Chester.

Yard Trimming and Small Limbs Pick-up:   The free pickup of yard trimmings and small limbs will continue throughout the year.   Chester residents must call the city maintenance shop answering machine at 826-3712 and clearly leave address to be put on the weekly pick-up list.  These items must be bagged or limbs bundled.  (Prefer limbs no longer than six feet long)  Gumballs can also be bagged for pick up.  The city is asking all residents to use biodegradable lawn bags instead of plastic trash bags.  The city will continue to pick up limbs and branches as needed after storms.  DO NOT PUT YARD WASTE IN TRASH TOTES. The trash company will not pick up or empty trash totes contain any yard waste.

Vac-Truck Leaf Pick-up: The city also offers the fall leaf pick-up program with the Leaf Vac-Truck usually starting early November until late November or early December.  Residents are asked to rake leaves and pile them up to the curb on the front street or in alley for pick-up.  Please keep leaves out of gutters and out of streets.  During the city leaf pick up, please avoid parking vehicles on streets next to piles of leaves during city working hours.  The leaf vac will not be able to reach the piles of leaves around parked cars. Residents should also call the city maintenance shop answering machine at 826-3712 to leave address for the pick-up list.   Residents can also bag leaves prior to and after these dates to be put on a pick-up list when vac truck is not in use.  Please use the biodegradable lawn bags. BIODEGRADABLE LAWN BAGS ARE AVAILABLE AT WAL-MART, ACE HARDWARE AND ROWOLD HARDWARE.

Disposal of Large Metal Items: The city will accept large metal items (washers, dryers, hot water heaters, refrigerators and other metal items) at the city maintenance shop (street department garage) for residents of Chester.  Residents can call and arrange a drop off time during normal hours from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.  This service is for Chester residents who are utility customers.  Individuals will be asked to present an Illinois Drivers License and/or Chester utility bill.  You must have permission and a city employee must be present when dropping off items.  NO ELECTRONICS.  Currently there is no place to dispose of electronics in Chester.  Tillocks in Baldwin, IL or Perry County Missouri Recycling Center will take electronics.  (see contact info below)  Keep an eye out for Electronic Recycling Events in our area.  Click here for list of I.E.P.A. E-Waste Collections Sites nearby.

Clean Up Events: The City of Chester will hold one “CLEAN UP” event each year.  This will usually be held the week after the community yard sale (usually in June – see flyer on Community Events page).  This will be advertised in local newspapers in advance.  During the “CLEAN UP” event, residents may put a reasonable amount of items out by the curb for disposal on your trash day only. This is a one time pickup and shall not encompass more than a 10′ x 5′ x 2′ area.  You must call 826-3712 to be put on the pick-up list.  The city maintenance staff will pick up these items – not the trash company.  Do not place items where trash tote can not be accessed by trash company.  Elderly or disabled residents may call 826-3712 or 826-5114 to make special arrangements or for any of these City services.  Quivey Sanitation can be contacted for a dumpster at 618-317-6790.  Debris from remodeling, roofing materials, old tires, batteries, hazardous waste, electronics, etc., CAN NOT be accepted by the City of Chester.  These items must be taken elsewhere.  Here are some licensed trash relay/recycle stations in the area:
